Transportation in Phuket: A Guide for Couples and Wedding Guests

Phuket continues to attract visitors in record numbers, with over 14 million tourists visiting our island in 2024. While the hospitality and commercial sectors are rapidly evolving to meet demand, the transportation infrastructure has been understandably slower to adapt. As a result, traffic can be heavy, particularly during the high season (November to March), making it more essential than ever to plan transportation effectively if you’re hosting or attending a wedding. To ensure a smooth wedding experience and avoid unnecessary stress, here’s an overview of Phuket’s transportation landscape, along with tips and recommendations for couples and their guests.

Traffic Hotspots to Keep in Mind

Traffic jams can happen in several areas of Phuket, but two locations stand out for their congestion:

  1. Patong: As the nightlife hub of the island, Patong experiences heavy traffic daily, especially from late afternoon to late night.
  2. Heroines’ Monument in Thalang: This critical intersection connects the south of the island to beaches like Bangtao, Naiyang, and Mai Khao, as well as to the airport. Traffic here can be particularly challenging.

Transportation Tips for Wedding Day

For a hassle-free ceremony, we recommend arranging transportation for all guests in advance. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Hire Minivans: Minivans with drivers are the ideal option. They can accommodate up to 12 people and are typically rented for an all-inclusive daily fee generally ranging from $150 to $200. Half-day rentals are also possible. If guests are staying in different parts of the island, arrange separate minivans for groups from nearby areas (e.g., Bangtao/Mai Khao, Chalong/Phuket Town, Patong/Rawai)
  2. Plan Ahead: Scheduling guest pick-ups ensures everyone arrives on time, avoiding the stress of individual guests misjudging travel times and getting stuck in traffic.

Having transportation pre-arranged is one of the best investments for the couple’s peace of mind on their big day.

Options for Pre- and Post-Wedding Days

For transportation on the days leading up to and following the wedding, there are multiple options:

  1. Private Minivans: If budget permits, hiring minivans with drivers for additional days is the most comfortable and reliable choice. This option is still relatively affordable compared to many other countries.
  2. Taxis: Taxis are widely available in tourist hotspots and most hotels. While prices are higher than in Bangkok or other Thai cities, they’re still reasonable by international standards. Most rides within the island cost under $20, with fixed fees typically agreed upon in advance.
  3. Ride-Hailing Apps: Grab is the most reliable app, though it can be up to 50% more expensive than competitors. Bolt and inDrive are cheaper alternatives but can be hit or miss.
  4. Scooters: Scooters are a popular and cost-effective way to get around Phuket. Hundreds of rental shops offer them at low prices, and they’re ideal for beating traffic. However, we strongly advise against the bridal couple using scooters before the wedding to avoid unpleasant incidents.
  5. Tuk-Tuks: No trip to Thailand is complete without a ride in a tuk-tuk! These iconic vehicles are fun for short distances (a few kilometers) and are especially prevalent in Patong. They’re a must-try experience for guests.

Final Thoughts

Phuket’s vibrant atmosphere and stunning venues make it a dream wedding destination, but the island’s traffic can pose challenges. By planning transportation in advance and understanding the options available, couples and their guests can enjoy a seamless experience, focusing on the joy of the celebration rather than the stress of logistics. Whether it’s hiring minivans, exploring ride-hailing apps, or hopping on a tuk-tuk, a little preparation goes a long way in making your Phuket wedding unforgettable.
