10 Questions

Could you tell us about your hometown and any other places that hold a place in your heart?

I was brought up in Cheam, Surrey (UK) and had a happy childhood, due largely to having a few good friends in the immediate neighbourhood. When I was 36, I spent two years working in Jordan and visited several sites in ‘The Holy Land’. Having studied scripture so constantly at school, it was amazing to feel the atmosphere in the rather meaningful places I’d only read about.

When did you first move to Phuket and why?

In 1993. I’d visited on holiday whilst working in the Middle East, (1985, ‘86), settled in Bangkok in 1987, but then got two years working in Kuwait just after the first Gulf war and ‘Desert Storm’. 600 oil wells were ablaze and the air incredibly smoky. Once my term in Kuwait finished, I chose Phuket to settle down in, in preference to my other choices of Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. Phuket was quaint, had everything I wanted at the time, felt more of a ‘normal’ location than Koh Samui, and had the ocean around it (I’d worked on cruise ships for three years in an earlier life !).

What profession did you have before becoming a celebrant?

I was working in property sales, on Phuket, for a number of years, but had been an engineer, medical technician, medical equipment and safety equipment salesman, writer and proofreader also.

What inspired your choice of becoming a wedding celebrant?

At a time I was foolishly considering an early retirement from the Phuket property scene in 2014, a friend and celebrant (I think Phuket’s first) suggested I’d be good as a celebrant, and that he’d train me if I wished. I took him up on it and am very glad I did.

What languages can you speak?

My Thai is passable, and I have shaky recollections of French, Spanish and Arabic.

How do you prepare for a wedding ceremony and how do you collaborate with the couple throughout the process?

Firstly comes the collaboration. No matter how I’m introduced to a couple, they receive an introductory email from me, with references to my website and celebrant Facebook page (if they haven’t seen it already), a choice of two suggested ceremonies (one longer than the other), some readings and a selection of vows. I let them know that the whole ceremony, and the wording, is very flexible, and elicit responses from them. Since Covid and the proliferation of online meetings, I offer one or more online video meetings and try to avoid meeting the couple face-to-face prior to the day, unless they live or are staying close by. For ceremony preparation, I review all emails and notes the day before, ensure my clothing is ready to go, and on the day, check, check, check that I have everything. I like to arrive at the ceremony location an hour or so before the start time, and always prefer to meet the bride and groom to check they’re happy with everything and that there are no last-minute surprise changes.

Is there any moment of the ceremony or any specific ritual that speaks to you more profoundly?

I think it has to be the vows, followed closely by the arrival of the bride with her presenter, and lastly the recessional as the couple walk or dance back up the aisle as ‘Mr & Mrs’.

Is there any wedding venue in Phuket that you particularly love?

Very difficult, as there are so many good ones; but I do like Cape Panwa and The Naka.

If you could go back to any time in history, what famous wedding would you love to celebrate?

I would have no favourites.

What advice would you give to couples that are preparing for their big day?

Because I’m not their planner, I generally don’t give advice. However, on the day I always encourage them to ‘relax, enjoy and try to remember’!
