10 Questions

Could you tell us about your hometown and any other places that hold a place in your heart?

Originally from Hong Kong and grew up in the U.S., my hometown now is Phuket and this place is very special to my heart.

When did you first move to Phuket and why?

I moved to Phuket in 2005 because of my Thai husband.

What profession did you have before becoming a celebrant?

I worked as a News Presenter and TV Host for many years, which led to MC/Hosting jobs for Conferences, Launches and Luxury Events before I was asked if I can perform in English or Cantonese as Celebrant.

What inspired your choice of becoming a wedding celebrant?

I did not aspire to become a Celebrant. Just like my work as a Broadcaster, Mass Communications Professional and even as a Hollywood Actress, this career found me and I learned I’m talented in it.

What languages can you speak?

Cantonese-Chinese, English, Japanese and Thai but I only perform in English, Cantonese-Chinese and Thai always leading with English for MC jobs. As a Celebrant, I only perform in English OR Cantonese - no Thai.

How do you prepare for a wedding ceremony and how do you collaborate with the couple throughout the process?

I first request to have an online meeting with the couple, limiting to 2 pre-event meetings before the wedding date. Within the meeting, I will ask and gauge the style of the couple, understand their expectations, the type of mood they wish to have on their special day, what I shouldn’t say or is sensitive to and also the dynamics within their family (if it’s complicated). I would then thereafter share with them my style and will be ready to prepare the MC script AFTER I receive the Events agenda with time codes.

When the agenda is received, I will work on the 1st MC script (earliest 3 weeks before the event date because now I’m quite busy) and then send it to the couple and cc wedding planner for their check and review. Then a 2nd draft will be prepared and will be sent again to the couple and cc to wedding planner for their review or approval.

This should all be done well before the couples fly into Phuket or other destinations and if needed, we will have a last minute pre-wedding meeting to go over any loose items, changed agendas, personal requests as well as for me to feel the energy of the couple in person. This process will allow for the smoothest and best understanding between all sides before their special day.

As for my own personal preparation, I write and study my own script (especially the ones in Thai and Cantonese), make sure I have at least 1-2 meetings with the wedding couple and make sure they have seen and replied to the MC script that I sent to receive their feedback. The couple is required to read my script in order for them to understand how important their day is to me and also get to know my style since I DO NOT read my scripts while I am performing. I only glance and speak based on the flow of the event, mood of the audience and how I observe the energy that is needed in order for me to adjust how something is said.

Is there any moment of the ceremony or any specific ritual that speaks to you more profoundly?

Weddings where couples are honest and vulnerable always get me crying because love is not about being the best or strongest but their willingness to give to each other as life partners. I always enjoy weddings where couples can go with the flow, keep open-minded to what is and allow themselves to enjoy the present.

Is there any wedding venue in Phuket that you particularly love?

Vanderbilt, Rosewood Phuket, Villa Aye are all very nice.

If you could go back to any time in history, what famous wedding would you love to celebrate?

I was Host to the Sultan of Malaysia’s son Ariff & Alias at Anantara Layan on January 2024 as their chosen MC so that was lovely but to me, all couples are just humans. Their status and fame is something I feel is wonderful for them especially if they worked hard to create it, but it doesn’t make me treat them any different from any other normal couple. A wedding day is supposed to celebrate love and not their titles or status. I enjoy authentic people and do not wish to work with fake or egotistic celebrities.

What advice would you give to couples that are preparing for their big day?

Their day is a once in a lifetime memory that should be enjoyed and treasured. Going with the flow, not allowing minor details, weather or stress to bother them is the best way to stay present to the moment. Let the team of professionals around them handle the stress for you and have fun!
