10 Questions

Could you tell us about your hometown and any other places that hold a place in your heart?

My hometown, Phuket, is where I've spent the majority of my life, aside from a few years in Bangkok for my university studies. It's a place dear to my heart, filled with memories and the warmth of familiarity. However, there's another place that holds a special corner in my heart, and that's Japan. More than ten years ago, I went to Tokyo for the first time, and it made a big impression on me. I fell in love with the culture, food, and the simple way of life there. Working with a Japanese wedding company called "Arluis Wedding" in Phuket gave me a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and their strong work ethic, which made me admire Japan and its people even more.

When did you first move to Phuket and why?

People of Phuket have good reasons to be proud of our hometown; culture, cuisine, and natural beauty. Phuket's Peranakan culture stands as a testament to our rich heritage. The Peranakan community is a blend of Chinese, Malay, and Thai influences, resulting in a unique and colorful cultural identity from distinctive architecture to traditional ceremonies (especially weddings) and cuisine. Of course, you cannot overlook Phuket's breathtaking beaches, which are among the most beautiful in the world.

When and how did you first start your activity in the flower business?

I started my journey in the flower business around 12 years back when I joined a flower shop in Phuket town. My role primarily revolved around wholesale operations. As a salesperson, I frequently visited hotels and resorts, persuading them to procure flowers from us. This experience broadened my knowledge about various flower varieties suited for different occasions and settings. Given my passion for art and crafts as a pastime, floral arrangement naturally caught my interest. Furthermore, with a degree in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) management, I recognized the potential to establish my own venture targeting this clientele segment.

What is the aspect of your work that you enjoy the most?

I find the most joy in the moment when the bride lays eyes on her bridal bouquet for the first time. It's a beautiful experience because the bouquet embodies the bride's personality. Brides put thoughtful consideration into the types of flowers and colors they select, and witnessing their excitement and satisfaction is truly special to me.

How many flower growers do you work with and where are they located?

We collaborate with wholesale flower suppliers in Bangkok's Pak Klong Talat, sourcing blooms from three main regions: the Netherlands, China, and Chiang Mai. From the Netherlands, we acquire high-quality roses, tulips, and calla lilies for their variety and elegance. China provides cost-effective options with diverse blooms. From Chiang Mai, we obtain heat-resistant Phalaenopsis orchids and Hydrangeas, ensuring our arrangements maintain their beauty even in tropical climates.

How do you help couples choose the right flower arrangement for their wedding?

I begin by understanding their vision. Often, brides bring along reference photos showcasing their preferred styles and arrangements. These images serve as a great starting point for our discussion. I take into account various factors such as the couple's chosen wedding color palette, the bride's personality, and the availability of flowers during the season of their wedding. It's important to harmonize the floral arrangements with the overall theme and ambiance of the event. I also guide them through the practical aspects, considering the budget without compromising on the aesthetic appeal. By offering insights into the costs associated with different blooms and arrangement styles, I help couples make informed decisions that align with their financial plans.

What are some timeless floral elements that you believe will never go out of style?

Two timeless floral elements that never lose their appeal are the rose and the hydrangea. The rose's elegance and symbolism of love make it a must-have for weddings and celebrations. Its versatility in color and fragrance ensures its enduring popularity. Similarly, the hydrangea's voluminous blooms and gentle hues bring a sense of grace to any arrangement. Its ability to complement other flowers makes it a timeless choice for bouquets and centerpieces.

Can you share a memorable wedding flower design you've brought to life?

One of my most memorable wedding flower designs was at The Shore Chapel. Its indoor beauty, accentuated by a breathtaking chandelier, set the stage for a delicate balance. I chose blooms like roses and hydrangeas in soft hues to complement the chapel's elegance without overpowering it. The goal was to enhance the venue's charm while ensuring the flowers didn't steal the show. It was a rewarding experience seeing the arrangements blend seamlessly with the chapel's ambiance, creating a truly magical setting for the couple's special day.

Is there any new innovative technique or material that you have recently experimented with?

Lately, we've been exploring a revolutionary foam-free floral installation technique. Foam holds the flower stems and foliage in place. This makes both design and transportation easy, but it's not healthy or environmentally friendly. In our recent experiments, we've transitioned away from foam and embraced a more sustainable approach involving plugging stems and foliage directly into soil. By doing so, we eliminate the need for foam while ensuring that our arrangements maintain their structure and beauty. This not only benefits the environment but also adds a unique natural element to our designs. Plus, it opens up creative possibilities, allowing us to incorporate live plants and create stunning installations that seamlessly blend with their surroundings.

What advice would you give to couples that need to choose a flower design for their special day?

One key piece of advice I would offer is to consider the seasonality and availability of flowers. Opting for blooms that are in season not only ensures freshness but can also save on costs. Additionally, think about the overall aesthetic you want to achieve and how different flowers contribute to that. Don't be afraid to communicate your vision clearly to your florist so they can bring your dream to life!
