A long-time Phuket resident, Nigel comes from the regal town of Windsor in the UK. With his enthralling British accent and classic elegance, he is really a natural-born celebrant. 10 Questions

Could you tell us about your hometown and any other places that hold a place in your heart?

I come from Windsor in Berkshire, UK. My voice reflects the accent of this region. Very clear and a tinge of Hugh Grant perhaps.

When did you first move to Phuket and why?

I first came to Phuket on holiday in 1990. I moved here permanently in 2012. I cannot think of any reason to leave Thailand.  I am very lucky to be here.

What profession did you have before becoming a celebrant?

I was a business owner.

What inspired your choice of becoming a wedding celebrant?

My great Celebrant friend, Alan, was my Bridge partner and when he became very busy he introduced me to this wonderful activity.

What languages can you speak?

I speak English perfectly, but I can also sing badly in many other languages.

How do you prepare for a wedding ceremony and how do you collaborate with the couple throughout the process?

I calm the groom down to a panic, and explain that I have already spoken to the Bride and I am going to do exactly what she says. (Groom visibly relaxes). Not rocket science.

Is there any moment of the ceremony or any specific ritual that speaks to you more profoundly?

When the couple have their own vows. From amusing to highly emotional or combinations of both, I have enjoyed so many.

Is there any wedding venue in Phuket that you particularly love?

Every venue is uniquely beautiful and Phuket is perfect for any luxury wedding setting.

If you could go back to any time in history, what famous wedding would you love to celebrate?

William and Kate. Victoria Mary Clarke and Shane MacGowen.

What advice would you give to couples that are preparing for their big day?

For the Bride, I would suggest: plan, think, dream, overplan, spend, cut back, plan more, increase budget and finish on ‘dream’. For the Groom: turn up on time. Also, check that the celebrant has a work permit.
